Woking Borough Council

What we helped achieve

We’ve been working with Woking Borough Council since 1998, providing CCTV camera maintenance across Woking town centre. When they needed a new data centre we were on hand to discuss every aspect of the project with their IT manager, providing guidance and specialist knowledge and outlining several options.

Some of the key benefits we’ve brought

  • A city centre data centre with forecast energy efficiency of 1.1 Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) equivalent to ‘very efficient’ on the Green Grid Scale
  • A scalable facility with the ability to expand from the current 10 data cabinets to a future capacity of up to 29 racks
  • A modular approach so Woking Borough Council can easily and accurately calculate costs per cabinet associated with leasing units
  • A secure data centre that would utilise their generator in the event of a power outage in Woking, batteries to power the data centre in the event of a breakdown and system prioritisation for safe shutdown should there be complete failure

The challenges we overcame

  • Expanded scope and tight timeframes - flexible team approach ensured the data centre was finished on time
  • Joined the data centre with the civic offices in a separate location - ran dark fibre links on carefully chosen routes across the town centre
  • No impact to town centre traffic, or key systems - scheduled the work to take place at weekends and overnight
  • Provided the optimal customer solution - designed and built a new data centre, rather than just a room to hold data racks
  • Supporting local businesses - the data centre has the flexibility for the council to sell rack space to other organisations, which is also self-funding
  • Reducing energy, costs and floor space - installed ‘in row’ door coolers, eliminating the need for costly ‘whole room’ air conditioning units
