EMCOR lends a helping hand to school in West Midlands

Thursday 7th August

The Cherry Tree Learning Centre (previously known as Dudley Home and Hospital Tuition Service) became a hive of activity recently when a team of volunteers from EMCOR Engineering Services, part of EMCOR Group (UK) plc, along with other sponsors and supporters of the project, pooled their resources to help revitalise the school's environment in just one day.

A variety of maintenance work was carried out on the school; an EMCOR plumber successfully repaired the cleaner's sink and waste removal system to prevent future flooding on the lawn. In line with EMCOR's Zero Accident Programme, EMCOR also provided safety advice and Personal Protective Equipment, including hard hats, high visibility safety clothing and goggles, to ensure the day was free of any potential hazards. Safety was paramount as much of the work involved working around people and children and some of the team were working at height. Local companies including Brandon Hire, Crown Paint and Barrett Decorating also supplied equipment and volunteers.

The Cherry Tree Learning Centre is a Pupil Referral Unit that educates vulnerable children who are unable to attend mainstream school due to physical, emotional and mental health difficulties.

EMCOR is involved in this project through the Black Country Constructing Excellence Club which aims to promote principles of best practice and innovation while creating a local network in support of continuous improvement. This project has demonstrated how the industry can work collaboratively to deliver excellence in the local community. Club Chairman, Roy Casey, said "We are very grateful to EMCOR and other club members and sponsors for their fantastic support for this, our first founding anniversary community support project, bringing our local construction community to the aid of those in need."

"A big thank you to all that were involved and for the wonderful work that was carried out. The redecorations will have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of these children as well as creating a more pleasant environment for the teachers to work in," said Linda Ashman, Deputy Teacher in Charge, The Cherry Tree Learning Centre.

John Felton, Head of Construction Services at EMCOR Engineering Services comments "The day was extremely rewarding and the whole team worked incredibly hard to improve the learning environment of the Cherry Tree Learning Centre. This is a real life example of how the Constructing Excellence Club and its members have managed to create positive change in the local community and set an example for future projects in the Black Country area and beyond."
