EMCOR completes £15 million contract with News International

EMCOR Engineering Services has completed a major project with News International worth in excess of £15 million to supply and install mechanical and electrical services for five new state of the art printing presses, enabling the publishing company to achieve a significant milestone in its history with the introduction of double-sided colour printing on all pages.
The new printing presses at the Knowsley site, near Liverpool, span a total of is 16,500m² (equivalent to 3 football pitches) and saw EMCOR providing a range of services for Carillion plc, the principal contractor on the project, including the installation of various HVAC and water systems, high voltage switchgear, fire detection and alarm systems and CCTV. The design coordination was particularly intricate and many CAD designers were based on site.

"This was an exciting project for EMCOR and one of a number of large projects carried out in the last 12 months. It was very much a partnership approach, tackling the issues jointly with all parties, equally ambitious to turn the press halls into a state-of-the-art printing facility."
EMCOR faced considerable challenges throughout the project due to the height and size of the building. One of the most demanding of all was the plant room, an existing room which had to be converted to cater for the new facility whilst maintaining continuity of the existing eight printing presses.
This printing site is one of three being developed by global media giant News International Ltd. across the UK at a combined cost of £600+ million. It will be used to print a range of local, regional and national newspapers including the News of the World, The Sun and The Times and the Sunday Times.
