EMCOR Scoops Gold for 11th Year at RoSPA Health and Safety Awards

EMCOR has won seven awards at the 2006 RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Occupational Health and Safety Awards, making it the eleventh consecutive year that EMCOR has won a RoSPA award.

The awards, which recognise best practice in occupational health and safety management, included Gold Medal Awards for all three of EMCOR's business units -- EMCOR Facilities Services, EMCOR Engineering Services and EMCOR Infrastructure & Rail Services.

Among the other accolades were Gold Medal Awards for EMCOR Engineering's North and South West regional offices, and Gold Awards for the Central and South East offices.

Commenting on the awards, Tony Whale, Chief Executive of EMCOR Group, said: "We're extremely proud of the excellent health and safety track record we have in the industry, and for this to be recognised by RoSPA for the eleventh year in a row is a testament to the commitment and investment we place in consistently reducing the incidence of accidents and injuries.

"Any injury is one too many, so our employees at all levels are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their actions to protect their own well-being and that of their colleagues and clients."

David Rawlins, RoSPA Awards Manager, said: "EMCOR has demonstrated how seriously it takes health and safety management and is a fine example to many other companies. We would like to see more companies following its lead by providing a positive example."

EMCOR's Health and Safety Management system is one of the company's four core competencies across the group and is a major element to its customer offering.

Specific initiatives that have contributed to EMCOR winning these awards include a Zero Accident Policy (ZAP) which has been successful in either eliminating hazards or reducing their residual risk through effective health and safety management systems. EMCOR also operates a 'Take 5' action plan, which encourages employees to take five minutes before starting a job to assess any potential risks and ensure that they have the necessary tools and materials to carry it out effectively and safely.

EMCOR's commitment to Health and Safety is also demonstrated through its 'incentivise safety' programme which grants a monthly £250 safety award to an employee selected from the company's inspection audit and monitoring schemes. A £100 spot prize is also awarded to an individual each month to reward those who proactively demonstrate the company's commitment to Health & Safety.

The RoSPA Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 10th May at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel, NEC.
