BACKGROUND
HMP Nottingham opened in 1890 as a city goal but was reconstructed in 1912 and until 1997 served as a closed training establishment for adult males.
In 1997, it re-rolled as a category B local prison, and now serves the courts of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
OBJECTIVES
The total building was required to interface with the existing prison accommodation and was to be constructed within a live prison environment without disrupting the prison operations.
SOLUTIONS
EMCOR worked very closely with PCSL Ltd, the main contractor on this project, and also formed a close working relationship with the principle contractor; Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd, and the Prison Authorities on site.
At the very start of the project, EMCOR also had the opportunity to involve the mechanical and electrical consulting engineers, providing solutions to this new build which had its own unique issues as it is a four storey building.
From the prefabrication of the houseblock cells being constructed off-site to the build on-site, both teams worked as one, meeting a very demanding programme.
