Manchester Bioscience, UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

EMCOR Engineering Services is undertaking work on the University of Manchester's first new build project for 30 years.

The Biomedical Sciences project will provide 21,000m2 of undergraduate teaching and advanced research facilities for biological scientists, pharmacists and medical researchers. The facilities include a highly serviced laboratory zone which houses sensitive and complex scientific equipment.

EMCOR was contracted by AMEC Capital Projects Ltd in 2002 to provide heating, chilled, domestic, hot and cold water systems, RO water system, laboratory gases, natural gas ventilation and AC systems. Also, full Electrical Installation including Specialist Lighting Systems, Fire Alarm Systems, BMS and Security Systems.

VALUE DELIVERED

EES Project Team Leader, Glynn Mellor, commented on the value delivered to the University of Manchester through this project.

"The building has been a fast-track project which has involved pre-fabrication of pipework and pre-assembly of pump sets to save time. Because of the compact nature of the site, we have had to adopt 'just in time' deliveries to meet programme activities. All this has required very close co-ordination between all trades on site."

BACKGROUND

The University of Manchester is incredibly proud of its rich heritage and its cutting-edge innovation and enterprise stretching back more than 175 years. Many of the major advances of the 20th century began here, such as the work by Rutherford leading to the splitting of the atom and the development of the world's first modern computer in 1948.

Today, the University's commitment to pioneering research prevails with continued investment in new facilities such as the new £30m Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (MIB).

The University has more than 3,000 academic and research staff, many with international reputations in their subjects. The University also has an exceptional record of generating and sharing new ideas and for producing graduates who are
always in demand from the world's top employers.

OBJECTIVES

EMCOR's ultimate objective was to assist the client in their vision, for the creation of a 21st Century University to be one of the finest and most preferred destination for the best students, teachers, researchers and scholars in the world.

The University will be one of the largest in the UK and will have teaching and research in more subjects than any other single-site British university.

SOLUTIONS

Due to the project's complexity, AMEC involved EMCOR early in the project and by doing so, created a strong partnership relationship.

"EES have a good team that listens and responds quickly. Drawing production has been very good, installation quality is extremely good and EES have pushed everything along to ensure that we deliver on time."

Maurice Cooper, Project Manager of AMEC

'It was refreshing to see the positive attitude of the contractors, they are open and proactive, they've done a very good job'

Adrian Robinson, of Manchester University

'EMCOR worked with ourselves to bring the price down, they took £1m out and without this help it was unlikely to go ahead. EMCOR are extremely competent, not claims conscious at all, an open and innovative contractor with a collection of extremely conscientious and talented people.'
Bill Watson, TPS Schal, Senior Project Manager
