The Great Northern Tower is a large development of 257 1 & 2 bedroom executive apartments and penthouses offering a contemporary living space in Manchester City Centre. The building was known colloquially as the “Slot” because the building was literally slotted between the MICC convention centre and the Great Northern Warehouse complex.
The buildings ranged from 9 storeys on the first building to 22 storeys on the final building
SCOPE OF WORK
EMCOR Engineering Services were responsible for the full Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health Services installation. Co-ordination was the key to this successful project and EMCOR played an integral part in this prestigious Manchester project, completing successfully on time and within budget to the clients satisfaction.
The Mechanical works included the supply and installation of dedicated car park extract systems, ventilation plant and equipment, domestic water, wet riser, drainage services, thermal insulation & sanitaryware. Air conditioning was incorporated into the upper and penthouse apartments.
The Electrical services covered the supply and installation of works comprising of L.V. distribution and switchgear, lighting, power, fire detection and alarms, electric heating, cable tray and trunking, conduit, earthing, equipment and lightning protection.
Automatic control services including door entry and access control systems were incorporated to give the building a high security level.

OBJECTIVES
The Great Northern Tower is a unique development incorporating apartments, penthouses, retail space and a private onsite parking. The Client believes it will provide its residents with a wonderful and secure environment in which to make the most of living in Manchester’s vibrant city centre. There is unquestionably an art to living in the city and The Great Northern Tower is helping to define it.
SOLUTIONS
This project offered the whole professional design challenges and EMCOR were able to assist in overcoming these as we were a part of the client team from an early stage and were able to bring our experience to the bear.
There was also a big logistical challenge in delivering a large city centre project with the constraints imposed by our neighbouring buildings.
This was achieved with very close liaison and a high level planning with the management contractor.
