VALUE DELIVERED
Crucial to the Museum's success is the availability of its estate and exhibitions to visitors and the preservation of its Grade 1 listed building and 70 million specimens. The Museum's South Kensington site is an iconic facility, and is a popular venue for corporate and media events. Ensuring that the building remains unaffected by the construction of catwalks for London Fashion Week, whilst protecting priceless collections, was one of the more unusual challenges faced by EMCOR. Resource requirements are planned well in advance allowing the Museum to focus on providing visitors with an unforgettable experience.
In 2009, EMCOR and the Natural History Museum were awarded a Premises & Facilities Management (PFM) Award in the Partners in Public Access category. This was received after demonstrating a strategically aligned and successful partnership, specifically in the areas of innovation, sustainability and long-term record of achievement. Regular engagement at strategic reviews involving both senior management teams provides the forum to review contract performance and future business strategy. A jointly designed bespoke development plan is also in place to enable progression, innovation and to deliver value.
SCOPE OF WORK
EMCOR manages services that directly affect the day-to-day running of the Museum's South Kensington, Tring, South London and Darwin Centre facilities including: building maintenance, engineering maintenance, grounds maintenance, project services, event support and life cycle management.
BACKGROUND
The Natural History Museum offers a unique experience to over 4 million visitors a year. As a world-leading science research centre, the Museum helps to conserve the extraordinary richness and diversity of the natural world, with ground breaking projects in 68 countries.
OBJECTIVES
- Working at the Museum involves interacting with visitors and complying with the regulations that ensure their safety on a daily basis
- Working with EMCOR, in 2003 the Museum was the first museum in the UK to receive the ISO 14001 environmental management accreditation
SOLUTIONS
EMCOR incorporates the Natural History Museum's requirements into its delivery model, providing facilities management, specialist health and safety expertise and unique compliance processes to the Museum. The Natural History Museum relied on EMCOR's Specialist Compliance expertise to ensure safe systems of work during the construction of the new Darwin Centre which saw 1500 contractors on site at the peak of construction. EMCOR's compliance expertise assisted the NHM Estates department in complying with the requirements of the Museum's BSI OHSAS18001 accreditation in 2007.
EMCOR continues to help the Museum work towards its CO2 targets by recommending energy reduction initiatives. For example, EMCOR reviewed the lighting intelligence systems in the main building which now include a display cabinet scheme which offers environmentally economic solutions for display needs. EMCOR also worked with hundreds of the Museum's science staff when moving into Phase II of the Darwin Centre to provide energy led initiatives for their working environment.
EMCOR, with the Natural History Museum, implemented the new Archibus building services maintenance system to streamline the preventative maintenance process to proactively maintain critical assets, minimising downtime and repair expenses. The Museum's mineral collection is stored in a variety of rooms and cabinets of which the locksmith service is particularly crucial. EMCOR has undertaken the management and supervision of this service within the existing site based team - resulting in an improved service offering and cumulative savings.
