EMCOR Engineering Services Ltd were responsible for the upgrade of existing energy infrastructure including plant rooms and buried district heating mains within the University of Liverpool campus.
VALUE DELIVERED
- The programme was extremely challenging due to the tight time constraints in place. The project had to reach completion in the University's summer “heat off" period. Regular reporting and programming helped to achieve this.
- Prefabrication of pipework was provided to reduce installation time in order to meet the clients challenging project delivery period.
- Unknown buried services and structural alterations proved challenging during trench excavations and underground building entries. This was overcome by detailed pre-start surveying works carried out by EMCOR engineers and was supplemented by structural consulting specialists.
- The project was completed one week earlier than planned due to close working relationships with the entire team and collaborative programming.
SCOPE OF WORK
EMCOR Engineering Services Ltd provided the following specialist services:
- 400 metre buried heating mains
- Replacement of pump sets
- Replacement of plate heat exchanges
- Extensive pre-fabricated pipework
- Control and electrical modifications
- Major excavations
- Concrete valve chambers
- Concrete duct extensions
BACKGROUND
Upgrades to the existing plantroom and extension to the district heating network were required to bring further university buildings online with the state-of-the-art energy centre recently constructed by EMCOR.
The new energy centre provides a more efficient way for the University of Liverpool to generate and utilise energy. This means there will be significant cost savings and reductions to annual energy consumption by over 13000 MWh and CO2 emissions by over 7000 tonnes, the equivalent to taking 2226 cars off the road each year.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the upgrade were:
- Avoiding impact on the users of the university during construction.
- Being mindful of the impact of disturbance to neighbouring businesses.
- Providing high quality facilities, whilst achieving excellent value for money.
SOLUTIONS
EMCOR contributed to the University of Liverpool project in the areas of design, construction, engineering expertise and the ability to deliver solutions that met and exceeded the client's requirements.
The client expressed their delight with the installation:
"Thanks for all your hard work, you completed a very challenging project ahead of programme and you didn't let the pressure affect your cooperative and proactive approach. Well done."
Ian Murray, Project Manager University of Liverpool
