Newcastle University, Student Administration Services Building

EMCOR Engineering Services Ltd provided the mechanical, electrical and public health services for this environmentally friendly new build scheme. As part of a major university-wide development scheme the project created new offices and a student administration services building for Newcastle University.

EMCOR also provided the external lighting scheme to be used as a pilot for rolling out across the entire campus. This innovative five-storey building provides a visitor centre on the ground floor, open-plan accommodation for all main student services and a range of administration functions including the executive office, HR, finance and safety offices

VALUE DELIVERED

A number of environmentally friendly features have been designed into the building resulting in an overall 10% reduction in carbon emissions. These include highly efficient building fabric, glazing, lighting and IT facilities and a design that renders air conditioning unnecessary.

SCOPE OF WORK

EMCOR Engineering Services Ltd provided the following specialist services:

  • Internal and external lighting
  • Power
  • Fire / security systems
  • Data / IT systems
  • Heating
  • Public health services
  • Building management systems
  • Ventilation services

BACKGROUND

This flagship new building brings together the University’s student and administrative services in one location, resulting in a more integrated service for students and staff, and providing some of the best student facilities to be found anywhere in the UK.

OBJECTIVES

The project was constructed on the original and occupied University Campus and was located within the busy city centre of Newcastle. Therefore it was imperative to provide an environment where disruption, noise and dust production were kept to an absolute minimum and, as always, an excellent standard of safety was maintained on site at all times.

SOLUTIONS

EMCOR delivered a forward thinking and proactive approach to this prestigious project and a dedicated and hard working team ensured that the difficult programme was successfully achieved with the building handed over to the full satisfaction of the ultimate client.

"The EMCOR team were very much team players and I had every confidence in their abilities. There was a real feeling of pride in their work which showed in the outstanding installation quality.

I am very satisfied with EMCOR’s performance and have already recommended them for future projects within the University."
